Shantou is a modern coastal city with a beautifully restored old-town quarter. It has the region's best hotels, the main high-speed rail station, the most restaurants per block, and sea views. It feels like a city that happens to contain history.

Chaozhou is the opposite: a historic city that happens to contain modern life. The ancient city is walkable end to end, and evenings along Paifang Street and the city wall are the most atmospheric hours in all of Chaoshan.
