Nan'ao Island

Guangdong's only island county — coastal roads, fishing villages and clear water.

An hour from Shantou across the sea bridge, Nan'ao is Chaoshan's island escape: lighthouses, beaches, seafood straight off the boat.

Why Visit

Nan'ao is where locals go when they want the sea. The 68km ring road links white-sand bays, wind farms, fishing harbors and hilltop viewpoints — one of the best coastal drives in Guangdong.

Top Things to Do

  • Drive or ride the island ring road with photo stops
  • Qing'ao Bay beach and sunrise
  • The red-and-white Sancongya Lighthouse
  • Seafood lunch at a fishing-village restaurant
  • Huanghuashan forest park viewpoints

What to Eat

Whatever the boats brought in: steamed fish, sea urchin fried rice, seaweed soup, mantis shrimp, oysters.

How Long to Stay

A full day works; one night on the island lets you catch both sunset and sunrise.

Local Tips

  • The Nan'ao Bridge connects the island to the mainland (toll applies)
  • Weekends and holidays get busy — go midweek if you can
  • Swimming is seasonal; water is best May–October
