How to Get to Chaoshan: Flights, Trains and the Airport Explained
Short answer: Fly into Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport (SWA), or take high-speed rail to Chaoshan Station (for Chaozhou) or Shantou Station (for Shantou). From Hong Kong the train takes about 3 hours; from Shenzhen about 2.5; from Guangzhou about 3.5.
By air
Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport (SWA) serves the whole region and sits between the three cities — about 40 minutes by car to either Shantou or Chaozhou. Direct flights connect SWA with Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and most major Chinese cities. We include airport pickup in every trip.
By high-speed rail
Three stations matter:
- Chaoshan Station — between Chaozhou and Shantou; closest to Chaozhou ancient city (~30 min by car)
- Shantou Station — inside Shantou city; best for Shantou hotels
- Shantou South — newer station south of the city; useful for Nan'ao-bound trips
Typical journey times: Hong Kong West Kowloon ~3h, Shenzhen North ~2.5h, Guangzhou East ~3.5h, Xiamen ~1.5h.
From Hong Kong specifically
The high-speed train from West Kowloon to Chaoshan is the smoothest route — one train, no transfers, about 3 hours. Book via 12306 or Trip.com; seats sell out on weekends and holidays.
Getting around once you arrive
The region is compact: Shantou–Chaozhou 40 min, Shantou–Nan'ao 1h, Chaozhou–Jieyang 40 min. Public transport between tourist spots is weak — this is why every trip we run includes a private car.
