Nan'ao Island Travel Guide: Guangdong's Island Escape
Short answer: Nan'ao Island is one hour from Shantou across the sea bridge. A full day covers the ring road highlights; one night on the island adds sunset, sunrise and a slower seafood dinner. Best months: May to October.
Getting there
The 11km Nan'ao Bridge connects the island to the mainland (toll applies). From Shantou city, allow one hour to the bridgehead and another 20–40 minutes to the main bays. There is public bus service, but the island is best experienced with a car — stops are scattered and infrequent.
The ring road, clockwise
The 68km island loop is the attraction itself. Driving clockwise from the bridge:
- Changshanwei Lighthouse — the red-and-white tower right after the bridge; the classic first photo
- Qian'ao Bay — quiet fishing coves and seaweed farms
- Qing'ao Bay — the main beach: 2.4km of sand, swimming in season, sunrise spot
- Sancongya Lighthouse — twin towers on the southeast rocks, best in afternoon light
- Huanghuashan — forest park and the island's high point for panoramic views
- The wind farms — hilltop turbines that make the island's signature skyline
Eating on the island
Order what the boats brought: steamed fish, mantis shrimp, oysters, sea urchin fried rice, seaweed soup. Restaurants cluster around Qing'ao Bay and the fishing harbor of Yun'ao. Ask the price per jin before ordering seafood — the honest shops volunteer it.
One day or two?
One day: bridge → lighthouse → ring road viewpoints → Qing'ao Bay lunch and swim → back before dark.
Two days: add a night near Qing'ao Bay, catch sunrise, walk the fishing harbor in the morning, and take the slow road back.
