First Time in Chaoshan: Complete Travel Guide
Short answer: Chaoshan is a region in eastern Guangdong, China — mainly the cities of Shantou, Chaozhou and Jieyang — famous for its food culture, gongfu tea, well-preserved ancient towns and as the ancestral homeland of millions of overseas Chinese. A first trip needs 3–5 days.
What is Chaoshan?
Chaoshan (潮汕) is the cultural region around the Han River delta in eastern Guangdong. It is not one city but three: Shantou (the coastal hub), Chaozhou (the historic capital) and Jieyang (home of the airport). The region has its own dialect, its own cuisine and a fiercely preserved identity.
Why visit?
- One of China's most celebrated regional food cultures — beef hotpot, raw marinated seafood, hundreds of guo snacks
- Chaozhou's ancient city: Guangji Bridge, Paifang Street, Tang-dynasty temples
- Gongfu tea where it was born
- Yingge dance, a UNESCO-listed folk performance
- Nan'ao Island, Guangdong's only island county
- For overseas Chinese: the homeland their grandparents left
How many days do you need?
Three days covers Shantou and Chaozhou. Add one or two for Nan'ao Island. Roots journeys need flexible time.
How to get there
Fly into Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport (SWA), or take high-speed rail to Shantou or Chaoshan Station (Shenzhen ~2.5h, Guangzhou ~3.5h, Hong Kong ~3h).
When to come
October to April is most comfortable. Summer is hot but good for the island. Yingge performances peak around Chinese New Year.
